Following the successful passage of the 2023 Midland ISD Bond, plans for a new elementary school in the Lone Star Trails area are moving forward, with the school set to open its doors in August 2025. The 92,500 square-foot campus will initially serve students from Pre-K through 6th grade, with a reconfiguration in 2028 transitioning it to Pre-K through 5th grade.
In accordance with district policy, a committee was formed to determine the name, mascot, and logo for the new school. Members of the committee were nominated by Midland ISD school board members, representing various districts across the city. Teachers from MISD also had the opportunity to express interest in joining the committee, with the final selection of educators chosen randomly from a pool of volunteers. The committee held a series of three meetings in August 2024, culminating in their recommendation for the school’s identity.
Community input played a central role in the naming process. Residents were invited to participate in a district-wide survey, distributed through social media, newsletters, and the MidlandBond2023.com website. This effort encouraged the submission of nominations for both the school’s name and its mascot.
After reviewing the community's submissions, the committee voted on the final selections. The name "Lone Star Trails Elementary" emerged as the top choice, reflecting the school's location and embodying a spirit of Texas pride. For the mascot, the Armadillo was chosen unanimously, capturing a unique symbol of resilience and strength often associated with West Texas.
The school colors will be red, white, and blue, symbolizing both the Lone Star State and the district’s commitment to honoring community input during the bond campaign. These colors will help foster a sense of unity and pride among students, staff, and the larger Midland community.
On September 17, 2024, the Midland ISD Board of Trustees officially approved the committee’s recommendation during its regular board meeting. Morgan Robertson, the principal of Lone Star Trails Elementary, expressed her excitement over the outcome.
“The naming process was an exciting time,” Robertson said. “The naming committee had great discussions, and we were able to keep a clear focus on the task to determine the name, mascot, and logo for the new elementary. Being the principal at Midland ISD’s 40th campus is surreal, and I enjoy new and challenging learning opportunities. This monumental event of opening a new school does not happen often, and getting to be a part of it from the ground up has been an amazing experience! I look forward to learning more throughout the year and ensuring Lone Star Trails Elementary and our families have a wonderful opening of school in August of 2025.”
Beth Garza, a committee member who was present at the board meeting, echoed Robertson’s sentiments about the significance of the naming process. "Serving on the elementary school naming committee was a truly fun process,” Garza said. “It was a big responsibility as well, as we went thoughtfully through every submission, both for the name and the mascot. After narrowing the selections down, we felt that our choices represented both the input from the city and West Texas very well. I can’t wait to cheer on our new school.”
As Lone Star Trails Elementary prepares to welcome students in the fall of 2025, the Midland community eagerly anticipates the launch of a campus that will become a cornerstone of the rapidly growing Lone Star Trails area. With a name, mascot, and school colors now in place, the foundation is set for a bright future. The next milestone for the district will be the continued construction of the campus, as well as preparations for a grand opening that will celebrate this exciting addition to Midland ISD’s family of schools.
