MPD travels to McCamey to help with bomb scare

MIDLAND, TEXAS -- The Midland Police Department assisted Upton County officials with a cluster bomb scare in McCamey this week.

At approximately 9:48 a.m. on Sept. 9, 2024, Midland Police received a request for help from Upton County Sheriff Sara Brown, who was enroute to the 300 block of South Crockett – which is two blocks from a school -- responding to what was believed to be a cluster bomb munition.

At this point, Midland PD officials reached out to contact at Dyess Air Force Base EOD in Abilene.  Officials at Dyess said it did look like a military munition and were going to start their deployment request process. Kevin Bullard, Micheal Pool, Kyle Slagle and Brian Rackow of the Midland Police Department responded to McCamey’s incident. The local officials took the appropriate actions and had set up a perimeter and there was no threat to the school at the time. 

“Before the team arrived on scene, Dyess called and said that they believed it was a second stage hydraulic cement collar used to seal a bore hole,” MPD reported. “They gave us guidance on what we should see on the X-ray of the item to help make the determination.  Kyle and Micheal went down range for X-rays at approximately 1:08 p.m.”

X-Rays determined that there was no threat, and it was an oilfield tool.
