MIDLAND, Texas — The City of Midland officially celebrated the opening of the renovated Reyes-Mashburn-Nelms Baseball Complex, located at 2101 East Cuthbert, in a ceremony held on March 18.
"Today is a proud day for our community," District 2 Councilman John Norman remarked during the opening. "These state-of-the-art facilities will offer our neighborhood kids a chance to play baseball on top-quality turf fields, with improved amenities such as modernized restrooms and upgraded concession stands, enriching the experience for players and their families."
The extensive renovation, representing a $16 million investment by the City of Midland, includes four Little League fields and two high school fields named after Midland baseball legends Mike Timlin and Randy Velarde. Featuring artificial turf on all six fields, the complex will serve as the home grounds for Eastern Little League and host numerous high school games and regional tournaments.
The renovation addresses key components from the 2016 Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan, including enhancements to field layout, seating, ADA accessibility, parking, and shade areas. The upgrades are designed to maintain Midland's competitive edge in attracting large-scale regional and national youth baseball tournaments.
"Beyond serving local youth teams, these facilities position Midland as a premier destination for regional weekend tournaments," Councilman Norman added. "Investing in parks and recreation is an investment in our children, families, and community’s future."
Councilman Norman extended gratitude to Mayor Lori Blong, fellow council members, city staff, and all individuals instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. "Your dedication to improving Midland's quality of life is commendable," he stated.
Construction, managed by general contractor Tarkett Construction, began in Spring 2024 and concluded in under a year. Landscape architecture was overseen by Brent Luck of Austin-based Luck Design Team, while civil engineering was provided by Halff. Other significant contributors include FieldTurf USA, MUSCO lighting, Corworth Buildings, and locally operated Playgrounds, Etc.
Key features of the renovated complex include:
Six artificial turf baseball fields with fencing and LED lighting
Modern prefabricated restroom and concession building
Walkways, trails, and 207 parking spaces
Enhanced stormwater management system
Updated landscape and irrigation
Ballfield lighting and digital scoreboards
Marquee and kiosk signage (installation pending)
The Reyes-Mashburn-Nelms Baseball Complex underscores Midland's ongoing commitment to youth sports and community development, poised to create opportunities for local athletes and attract visitors from across the region for years to come.
