The Fort Stockton Police Department has issued a public warning regarding a recent phone scam targeting local residents. According to a statement released on the department’s official Facebook page, scammers are impersonating officers by "spoofing" the police department’s phone number. They are falsely informing victims that there is an active warrant for their arrest and demanding payment over the phone to clear the supposed warrant.
Authorities stress that the Fort Stockton Police Department does not operate in this manner. "We will never ask for any form of payment over the phone to clear a warrant," the department emphasized, adding that no official business will be conducted via unsolicited calls requesting personal or financial information.
The scammers are reportedly pressuring individuals into providing sensitive details, such as date of birth, Social Security numbers, and credit card information. Police urge residents who receive such calls to avoid sharing any personal information and instead hang up immediately. If residents have concerns about the legitimacy of the call, they are advised to contact the police department directly using the official phone number.
The Fort Stockton Police Department is working to raise awareness and prevent further victimization. "We want to ensure the safety and security of our community. No one should be tricked into giving their private information to criminals," said Chief of Police in the statement.
For anyone affected by this scam or with additional concerns, the department encourages reporting the incident to the police immediately.
