Midland Independent School District (MISD) continues its streak of academic achievements as seven more students have been named “Commended Students” by the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. This recognition places these students among the top 3% of all test takers across the nation on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). This achievement highlights both the individual accomplishments of these students and the increasing academic distinction of MISD as a whole.
The seven students honored as Commended Students are:
• Eliana Aguila (Midland High School)
• Aidan Sanchez (Midland High School)
• Ryan Rounds (Legacy High School)
• Paula Padron (Young Women’s Leadership Academy)
• Hannah Russum (Young Women’s Leadership Academy)
• Sumi Schwarz (Early College High School)
• McKensey Dunaway (Early College High School)
These students join three National Merit Semi-finalists from MISD, bringing the district’s total number of students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program this year to 10. This marks a significant increase from the four students recognized in 2023 and just two in 2022. The jump in the number of recognized students reflects an upward trend in academic performance and college readiness across the district.
The National Merit Scholarship Program
The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious academic recognition programs in the United States, with the PSAT/NMSQT serving as the entry test for high school juniors. Each year, approximately 1.5 million students take the PSAT, with the top 3% receiving Commended Student recognition, which acknowledges high scorers just below the semi-finalist level. Being named a Commended Student is an impressive achievement that signals academic excellence and boosts students’ prospects for college admissions and scholarship opportunities.
MISD’s Growing Academic Recognition
The rise in National Merit recognition coincides with a broader increase in academic achievements throughout MISD. In addition to the seven Commended Students and three National Merit Semi-finalists, 64 students across the district recently earned the College Board’s National Recognition Award. This award is given to students who have excelled in PSAT, SAT, or Advanced Placement (AP) exams, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
These accomplishments serve as a testament to the district’s focus on academic excellence. Dr. Amanda Melchor, MISD’s Executive Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning, emphasized the significance of these honors, stating, “The achievements of these students are a testament to their hard work and dedication. Being named a Commended Student is an incredible accomplishment that will enhance college and career prospects and raise the profile of MISD academics as a whole.”
Impact on College and Career Readiness
For students, recognition by the National Merit Scholarship Program holds considerable value in terms of college admissions and scholarship opportunities. Colleges and universities across the country take note of National Merit honors when considering applicants, and many offer substantial scholarships to both Commended Students and Semi-finalists. As a result, MISD’s growing number of National Merit scholars highlights the district’s success in preparing students for post-secondary education.
Additionally, the district’s investment in advanced coursework, including AP classes and dual-credit opportunities, as well as targeted academic support, has contributed to the growing number of students achieving national recognition. MISD has demonstrated a commitment to fostering environments where students can thrive academically, both through rigorous curriculum and individualized support.
Recognition Ceremony
The seven Commended Students, along with the National Merit Semi-finalists, will be formally recognized at the upcoming MISD School Board meeting on October 15. This ceremony will provide the district and the broader community an opportunity to celebrate the students’ achievements and honor the work of MISD educators who have supported them along the way.
Looking Ahead
As MISD continues to enhance its academic programs and provide opportunities for student success, the district is on track to further increase its representation in prestigious academic competitions like the National Merit Scholarship Program. This year’s growth, from two National Merit honorees in 2022 to ten in 2024, signals a positive trend for the future. Students, educators, and administrators alike have demonstrated that hard work and a commitment to excellence can elevate the academic standing of the district.
Based on the achievements of these seven Commended Students and the other academic honors this year, MISD continues to make strides toward fostering a culture of high academic performance, further cementing its place as a district focused on preparing students for success in college, careers, and beyond.
